Why Every Company Should Have A Non-Exec.

Why Every Company Should Have A Non-Exec.

I have specialised in digital media recruitment for over 18 years and have identified huge benefits of hiring a quality Non-Executive Director (NED) or Advisor. Aspects of the media industry are experiencing troubled times, though we also have a lot to be thankful for (I feel for the sectors in retail, hospitality and sports). As an industry we are always looking to get closer to our clients, whether that be agencies, Adtech, clients direct or publishers.

I am aware of many amazing C-Level directors; either looking for roles or had to take huge pay cuts just to keep businesses solvent. The main obstacle to any business wanting to move into new areas or strengthen their position is either financial or attracting quality talent. If I had a pound for every time someone wanted a rock star but could only expend on a backing singer I’d be a millionaire!

How can businesses stand out and pay for quality talent? To me the answer is clear... employ at least one NED.  Take a start-up for example, they may need to understand the market they are launching into or want to move into. Perhaps new areas of business require the onboarding of senior talent. Often the board or VC’s won’t sign off the basic requirements to attract a player coach turbo. Founders are commonly very talented, but not everyone is as proficient in all areas and therefore creates blind spots.

The NED is the perfect solution; they have an external view, vast experience within the chosen market / skill base required, incredible contacts, can help the executive board navigate VC’s, business issues and even winning clients for the business.
